American Tattoo Institute

The American Tattooing Institute operates a website found at http://www.tatsmart.com/ and is physically located in Glendale, Arizona. The website is the brainchild of Rick Mattoon, a former Mayo Clinic clinical coordinator, who is the president and technical director for the American Tattooing Institute.
Upon visiting the website, you are met with the American Tattooing Institute’s mission statement- “Our mission is to help new and existing artists obtain the best and most affordable education and certification available in the tattooing industry.” Along with the mission statement is included information about the certifications that the company has to offer on the site itself as well as the fact that the course itself is free although if you want to take the certification test itself, there is a nominal one time fee of $69. Below the above mentioned is a disclaimer stating that “Our certification program is not meant to take the place of a thorough apprenticeship with a reputable artist. Completion of our program is designed to reinforce good procedural standards within the studio.”

The actual course itself is broken down into six chapters not including the Code of Ethics. The subjects that are covered within the course are as follows-

Chapter 1- Skin anatomy and Physiology
Chapter 2- Procedures for Studios and Artists
Chapter 3- Blood borne Pathogens- OSHA Summary
Chapter 4- OSHA Standards 29 CFR
Chapter 5- Food and Drug Administration Fact Sheet 58
Chapter 6- State and Local Regulatory Offices

The chapters of the test are readily accessible to anyone by simply clicking on the chapter you are interested in studying. The chapter lessons themselves are relatively thorough and includes some pictures, going over everything stated initially within the outline.

The website states that the test is designed to be taken open book and that one should use the six chapter course as a reference guide as needed. As stated before, the actual course itself is 100% free but in order to receive a certification you must A. pass the test with a 75% or higher and B. Pay $69 to take the test itself. Along with the actual certification test are links that focus on the business side of owning a tattoo parlor as well as resources on starting a business. The site also covers reasons why you should get certified as a tattoo artist if you are serious about the craft and starting a business.

Accompanying the certification course are several links to ancillary subjects such as permanent makeup or cosmetic tattooing as well as a link to purchase DVD training materials on the art of tattooing. There is also a link available to purchase literature and reading material pertinent to the art of tattooing. One of the featured pieces of literature is the Advanced Tattoo Artist Book, a 144 page book that takes the reader inside of ten popular and experienced tattoo shops located throughout America.

All in all, the American Tattooing Institute offers multiple sources of information, resources for those serious about tattooing, as well as a certification course for those individuals looking to start a business as a certified tattoo artist.
